So cinnamon-y good you might drink so much that it can be a health hazard!
I’ve been looking for a good non-caffeinated cinnamon tea for years to replace some wonderful California organic blend a friend once gave me knowing how much I loved cinnamon-spiced teas. It’s somehow harder than you’d think to find something nummy *and* and have it been available longterm.
I’m happy to report that B&B’s Hot Cinnamon Tea addresses the first issue. This is fantastically cinnamon-y, like Fire Pix cinnamon toothpicks or Big Red chewing gum (sorry - I grew up in North America). Open the bag and take a sniff. It’s so rich and spicy! While it includes rooibos, cinnamon is the first ingredient, and it’s not bitter at all thanks to using stevia as a natural sweetener.
I hope B&B will continue to carry it for a long time!
Beware, however! It’s very easy to drink lots of this regularly— or it is for me. This could have health implications for diabetics, sensitive individuals, and people with liver disease. That’s because the cinnamon used is cassia cinnamon (I contacted B&B directly to confirm the kind of cinnamon used in this blend). Cassia cinnamon, unlike its cousin Ceylon cinnamon, has a high coumarin content. Coumarin is considered moderately toxic for the liver and kidneys in Europe.
A teaspoon of cassia cinnamon contains anywhere from 5 to 12 mg of coumarin. European legislation from 2008, still in force in the UK, limits coumarin in flavourings to no more than 5 mg/kg in general with higher limits for desserts and specialty bake items. It’s difficult to…
