Misnamed.

Let me start by saying that I bought this on the strength of Ruby's description of her ambitions for this tea. A 'book flavoured tea', a tea that is 'made to emulate the smell of old books, of aging paper', 'the mustiness of a library, the slight smokiness of candleflame' is an intriguing idea and as a bibliophile and sinensophile I had to try it straight away, but this tea just isn't that. It's a nice enough tea if you're fond of highly flavoured teas. But I'm essentially disappointed that this tea is largely vanilla with a hint of coconut. (I never sugar my tea but this still comes across as sweet). As I said, this may be exactly what some people like, but it's not what I expected based on the name, and if anything the strength of vanilla is a bit intrusive and unpleasant when not expected in a black tea.

An old candle lit library conjours up a smokiness a bit like a Russian Caravan or a weak Lapsang Souchong tea, woody notes, fermented, and full bodied. But any nuance from blending different tea bases, or intent to introduce woody, earthy or smokey tones is very much lost under the vanilla and coconut, which is sad, as it could have been made from first flush leaves or fannings and you wouldn't be able to tell. (In line with most black teas, if you drink it black you will get more of a vegetal back note coming through though.)

Decaying books sadly really don't smell of vanilla, (take it from someone who's spent years working in secondhand bookshops).

I admire the…

Perfect for a Book Nerd

This tea is a warm hug from your best friend in a warm coffee shop/bookstore right before you get down to the business of reading and discussing books. My only regret is not ordering more right away!
